Why reflect?

Reflection papers are where a good deal of the learning occurs in this course.  Why?  Because it is the most strategic point in the process where learners can stop what they're doing, look back at very recent performance, and examine what they did in the light of what they intended to do.

This reflective move brings some unexpected benefits at times.  Some students have reported being surprised at how well they did, and then in retrospect, they were able to see exactly why they were so successful.  Others have a similar experience with less-than-successful experiences.

The important element is the LEARNING.  What you get out of it.  What you take away from the experience of applying skills and principles to a real public speaking situation.

Public Speaking Reflection Paper

Monterey Peninsula College

Public Speaking (Speech 1)

Professor: Dan Fox, Ph.D.

Task:

·       Write a reflective paper focusing on your experience as a presenter, giving particular attention to areas such as gathering materials, speech writing, presentation practice, verbal and/or nonverbal delivery, use of visual aids, audience response, speech anxiety or perception of self.

Format and Style:

·       A suggested format: (1) Strengths, (2) Weaknesses, and (3) Ideas for Improvement.

·       Another possible format, the “CODS”: Effectiveness in the areas of (1) Content, (2) Organization, (3) Delivery, (4) Support.

·       6-8 pages, double-spaced, typed.

·       Use a common style guide (such as APA, MLA) for mechanics and formatting.

Other stipulations:

·       In addition to the above criteria, the paper must be truly reflective (that is, analytical, critical, consciously focusing on issues pertinent to the principles of public speaking as they relate to your speeches in this course).  Avoid mere observations (i.e., “First this happened, then this, then this….); strive to assess, analyze, and reflect back on your successes.

Important Notes and Suggestions:

·       Remember that this assignment is worth a great deal in the point total for the course.  It is an important assignment.

·       You may want to break up the paper into sections that focus on each of your four individual speeches.  That will keep it manageable, and help you focus your ideas.  You may also include your group presentation as part of your analysis.

Due Date:

·       The Reflection Paper is due no later than ______________________.
