Self Introductory Speech

 

ASSIGNMENT: 

To inform the audience about an influence (environmental or personal), experience, activity, or value that best describes or identifies you as a unique person.

 

TIME: 

3 to 5 minutes.

 

FOCUS: 

Develop a speech that has substance, applying basic organization principles (effective introduction, well organized body of main points, adequate conclusion), and adopting a conversational style of delivery (also known as extemporaneous delivery).

 

ORGANIZATIONAL CRITERIA:

 

INTRODUCTION

·        Focus audience’s attention on the topic.

·        Establish a desire to listen.

·        Clearly state your specific purpose (thematic statement), and preview the main points in the Body.

 

BODY

·        Main points should be clearly stated and in logical order.

·        Main points should be supported with relevant, interesting examples or narratives.

·        Language should be clear, vivid, concrete, personalized, and appropriate.

·        Attempt to relate your points to audience’s experiences or interests.

 

CONCLUSION

·        Main points summarized.

·        Conclude so that you give the audience a sense of closure.

 

DELIVERY

·        Project enthusiasm, energy, and sincerity.

·        Extemporaneous delivery, maximum one 5” by 7” card.

·        Maintain eye contact with the audience.

·        Project adequate volume, rate, emphasis, and vocal quality.

·        Gesture naturally, maintaining good posture and effective body movement.

·        Meet the time constraints (between 3 and 5 minutes).
